Neurodivergent kids often internalize stories deeply, so an unvetted search algorithm can do real harm — surfacing a book by keyword match alone, with no read on whether it actually gets the diagnosis right. We built our curation process to go past the surface-level tags a commercial bookstore engine uses and read the way a parent would.
Here is the 4-point filter we apply to verify every single title:

At least one named strength tied to the diagnosis/trait: We look for more than just generic 'inclusivity.' We check for specific callouts, like modeling hyperfocus as a strong problem-solving asset rather than a quirk to manage.

Kid-facing language, not parent-facing language: We review the actual syntax and sentences read directly to or by the child, ensuring the narrative speaks directly to them instead of lecturing them through parent-facing jargon.

No "fixed by the end" trope: We deprioritize books where the character's differences are resolved, cured, or erased by the last page. Instead, we select stories where the character is still themselves, and that's perfectly fine.

This graphic novel passed all our tests because it details Cece's hearing impairment as a source of both real frustration and her literal superpower (her hearing aid). Crucially, her difference is never resolved, cured, or erased by the end. She is still herself, navigating her world with pride.
